Abstract
The Indian landmass is being affected by major river systems such as Ganges, Brahmaputra by large-scale flooding, severe cyclones, and the hilly tracts of Himalayas by major landslides caused which resulted in substantial loss of human lives and property. It may be observed that advancement in information technology in the form of internet, geographic information system (GIS), remote sensing, satellite communication etc. can help a great deal in planning and implementation of hazard reduction measures. Awareness amongst the public as well as decision makers for allocating resources for appropriate investments in information technology is required. In this paper, an attempt has been made to highlight the importance of information technology in the management of natural disasters in India by identifying a few key areas which need strengthening/improvement of technological inputs to integrate information across many disciplines, organizations, and geographical regions
