Expenditure Pattern of Urban Families

Abstract

For the present study, a total sample of 300 respondents from two cities (Hisar and Rohtak) of Haryana state were selected. The data were collected with the help of well structured interview schedule which was duly pretested. When the expenditure pattern of families was taken into consideration, it was found that majority of the families from the income group between Rs. 7000 and 16000 used to spend between Rs. 1500-3000 on food, between Rs. 200-850 on clothing, between Rs. 100-1600 on shelter between, Rs. 50-500 on medicine, between Rs. 300-1050 on fuel, between Rs. 500-2350 on education, between Rs. 50-700 on recreation and between Rs. 800-2350 on miscellaneous items per month. Majority of the families from the income group between Rs. 16001-25000 used to spend between Rs. 3301 - 5000 on food, between Rs. 200-850 on clothing, between Rs. 100-1600 on shelter, between Rs. 50-500 on medicine, between Rs. 300-1800 on fuel, between Rs. 500-2350 on education, between Rs. 50-700 on recreation and between Rs. 2351-3900 on miscellaneous items per month. Monthly expenditure of families belonging to income group between Rs. 25001- 34000 shows that majority of the families used to spend between Rs. 3301-5000 on food, between Rs. 851 -1500 on clothing, between Rs. 100-1600 on shelter, between Rs. 50-500 on medicine, between Rs. 1051 -1800 on fuel, between Rs. 500-2350 on education, between Rs. 50 - 700 on recreation and between Rs. 2351- 3900 on miscellaneous items per month. It is further concluded that majority of the families having income of Rs. 34001- 43000 used to spend between Rs. 5101-7000 on food, between Rs. 1501-2200 on clothing, between Rs. 100-1600 on shelter, between Rs. 501-1000 on medicine, between Rs. 1801 - 2500 on fuel, between Rs. 500-2350 on education, between Rs. 50-700 on recreation and between Rs. 2351-5500 on miscellaneous items per month. The total per capita monthly and annual expenditure of majority of families was Rs. 1852 (Rs. 8473.40 per family) and Rs. 22227(Rs. 101680 per family) respectively.
