Assessment and Enhancement of Knowledge of Youth Regarding Green Buildings for Sustainable Future

Abstract

The housing sector in India is growing at a rapid pace and contributing immensely to the growth of the economy. This augurs well for the country and now there is an imminent need to introduce green concepts and techniques in this sector, which can aid growth in a sustainable manner. Green concepts and techniques in the residential sector can help address various national issues. In wake of increasing environmental crises, it is the green buildings which play a critical role towards averting major ecological crises. Youth is a period which shapes the future of individuals. Today’s youth will be the future owner of the house. Therefore, it is assumed that the youth will give due consideration to the environmental conditions while constructing or buying their own houses. Visualizing the need of green building, it became necessary to find out the level of knowledge of the youth on several aspects of green buildings and to enhance the level of knowledge of the youth regarding green buildings. An educated and aware youth on various aspects of green buildings is sure to influence many other youth and other people around them. Hence, the present study aimed to develop an educational programme on various aspects of green buildings in order to bring awareness regarding the same among the youth and find its efficacy for enhancing the knowledge of the youth regarding green building. The data were gathered through questionnaire on a sample of 120 (60 boys and 60 girls) youth through systematic random sampling. The content regarding green buildings in educational programme highlighted certain aspects such as site selection, water efficiency, energy conservation, building materials and indoor environmental quality. Descriptive and relational statistics were used for statistical analysis. The educational programme developed can be used to enhance knowledge regarding green building for various target groups.
